Direct Current (DC) Motors

Though slightly less common than AC motors, DC motors are gaining ground in modern HVAC equipment, their precise control and adaptability supporting more advanced system designs. Standard options include:

  • Brushed DC Motors: Brushed variants utilize mechanical brushes and a commutator to switch current and maintain rotor motion. While they are cost-effective and straightforward, they experience brush wear over time and can produce more electrical noise, which is why they have largely been phased out in favor of brushless alternatives. However, they may still be found in some legacy systems where intermittent or low-demand operation is sufficient.
  • Brushless DC Motors (BLDCs): BLDC motors eliminate the need for mechanical brushes by using electronic controllers to switch current to the stator windings. In turn, this results in smoother operation, much less electrical noise, and significantly lower maintenance requirements. With a permanent magnet rotor and electronically commutated design, these motors also provide excellent energy efficiency in a small form, serving a vast array of modern HVAC applications.
